When Should You See a Counsellor?

By Abhinaw • 21 July 2026 • 5 min read

The most common thing people say in a first session is a version of: "I do not know if I should even be here, other people have real problems."

This idea, that you need to reach some threshold of suffering before you are allowed support, keeps a lot of people struggling far longer than necessary.

A More Useful Question

Instead of "is this bad enough," try: is this taking up more of my life than I want it to?

If something is occupying your thoughts, affecting your sleep, shaping your decisions, or draining energy you would rather spend elsewhere, that is sufficient reason. Counselling is not only for crises, much as physiotherapy is not only for broken bones.

Signs Worth Paying Attention To

Reasons People Wait, and Why They Do Not Hold

"I should be able to handle this myself." You probably can, eventually, at greater cost. Handling it alone is not more virtuous, only slower and lonelier.

"Talking will not change my circumstances." Sometimes true. But how you carry a situation, and the options you can see within it, both change with support, and those are not small things.

"I have friends I can talk to." Friends are valuable and not interchangeable with this. Friends have their own stake in your life, and you manage the relationship while talking. A counselling session has no such obligation.

"I do not want to be labelled." Seeking support does not require a diagnosis, and at PsySupport, labelling is not what we do.

Get Help Sooner If

Do not wait if you are having thoughts of harming yourself, if you are unable to function day to day, or if you are relying on alcohol or substances to get through. The helpline and emergency numbers are at the bottom of this page.

What You Are Actually Committing To

One conversation. That is the whole commitment. You are not signing up for years, and you are not obliged to continue if it does not feel right. Most people find the step much smaller than the months of hesitation that preceded it.

Talk It Through With Someone

If any of this sounds familiar, you do not have to work through it alone. PsySupport offers confidential counselling sessions in Noida and online across India.
